Let’s start with a confession: we’ve definitely Googled our own business and had that moment of panic when nothing shows up. And we’re literally a digital agency. So if you’ve found yourself staring at a blank Google search results page and wondering “Why is my Google Business Profile not showing in search?”, trust us, you’re not alone - and no, you haven’t broken the internet.
This blog is here to help you dig into the real reasons why your Google Business Profile listing might be doing an invisibility act on Google Search - and, most importantly, what to do about it.
First things first, what should your profile look like?
Before we get stuck into problem-solving, let’s make sure we’re all talking about the same thing.
When a Google Business Profile is working correctly, it appears:
- In the right-hand Google Search knowledge panel of a desktop search
- Within the Google Maps results in the Google Maps app
- In the Local Map Pack (the 3-pack of local listings shown beneath the map in local searches)
These are known as SERP features and they're incredibly important for visibility. If your business listing is missing from all of these, or just not appearing where you’d expect, something’s gone sideways. Let’s figure out what.
1. Your profile isn’t verified (or it’s still pending)
Yes, it’s basic. Yes, it’s overlooked all the time.
Google doesn’t show unverified profiles in Search or Maps. Even after you’ve completed the verification process, it can take a few business days for your profile to start appearing in results.
Verification methods vary by business type and may include:
- Email to a verified domain address
- Phone or SMS
- Video Verification
- Live video call
- Uploading a recording to verify your location and signage
You’ll only see the options Google offers for your specific business.
What to do:
- Check your Google Business Profile dashboard to see your verification status.
- If it says “Pending” for more than a few days, contact Google Business Profile support.
- Or, if you’d rather not get lost in the support vortex, we handle verification and listing setup as part of our local SEO services.
2. You’ve violated Google’s guidelines (probably accidentally)
Google’s rules for representing your business are stricter than you might think. Even innocent mistakes can lead to suspended or hidden profiles.
Common slip-ups include:
- Adding keywords to your business name (e.g. “Best Digital Agency in Edinburgh - Website Design”)
- Using a P.O. Box or an address that isn’t a genuine, staffed location
- Selecting the wrong GBP categories (or too many)
- Creating duplicate listings with conflicting business information
If you’ve violated one of these Google policies, Google will usually show a clear notification in your Business Profile account confirming that your listing is suspended.
What to do:
- Review Google’s current guidelines for representing your business.
- If you see a suspension notice, correct the issues and submit your profile for reinstatement.
3. You’re being outranked by competitors
Even if your listing is technically live, it might not appear for the geo-modified search terms your customers are using.
It all comes down to ranking factors, like:
- Proximity to the searcher
- Relevance of your listing
- Prominence (based on Google reviews, business information, backlinks, and user engagement)
What to do:
- Check your selected GBP categories and make sure your business category is accurate and specific.
- Write a detailed, keyword-rich business description.
- Upload high-quality photos.
- Get more reviews and respond consistently, ideally using something like a
- Google Review QR Code to make it easy
- Use Local SEO tools like Local Falcon or Semrush (or let us use them for you) to track local SEO performance
Visibility isn’t just about ticking boxes - it’s about a strong online presence backed by strategic digital marketing.
4. Your business info is inconsistent online
This one’s easy to overlook. If your NAP (Name, Address, Phone number) isn’t identical across your website, Google Business Profile, and other platforms, Google’s local search algorithm can get confused.
What to do:
- Make sure your business information on your website exactly matches your Google Business Profile.
- Check that your NAP citations and business hours are consistent everywhere - even on older pages or directories.
This is one of the most common causes of visibility issues, and often the easiest to fix.
5. Your service area or address is hiding you
If you’re a service-area business, you probably don’t have a physical storefront, and that’s fine. But your business hours, location settings and service area setup all need to be accurate.
Overreaching on area coverage or underestimating your actual service region can hurt visibility, especially after updates like the Possum update which tightened filters around local relevance.
What to do:
- Check your settings in the Google Business Profile Manager
- Define your service area based on where your customers actually are.
- Avoid going too broad - relevance still matters more than range.
6. You haven’t updated your profile in ages
Google favours active profiles. Profiles with low reaction score, few updates, or no recent content tend to slip down the rankings.
What to do:
- Add Google posts to your profile periodically using the Google Updates section - a monthly post or new photo can help.
- Respond to reviews regularly - tools like the Google Review Reply AI Assistant can help speed this up
- Keep your opening hours and contact details up to date.
You don’t need to post weekly, but these actions signal reputation signals to Google, boosting trust.
7. You’ve got a brand name visibility issue
Sometimes your profile is fine - it’s just not appearing when people search for your business name.
Possible causes:
- A competitor with a similar name outranking you
- A name that’s too generic or location-heavy
- Google filtering your listing due to similarity or duplication
What to do:
- Check how your name appears in Search Console
- Check that your brand name is used consistently across your website, social media and Google profile.
- Use structured data (Schema Markup) on your site to reinforce your brand identity.
- Consider checking visibility using the Google URL Inspection Tool or tools like
- Mobile-Friendly Test to rule out technical issues
If your profile is live but you still can’t find it when searching directly for your business name, that’s not normal, and it’s often a sign something deeper is wrong. That’s the point where it’s worth getting a specialist involved to take a proper look.
Still can’t find yourself? You’re not mad - just invisible
Sometimes, even when everything seems right, Google’s systems shift or bugs creep in behind the scenes. AI-driven features like Google AI Overviews or AI-generated summaries are also increasingly influencing visibility. If you’ve checked everything above and your profile is still missing, it’s time to ask for help.
We can review your listing, check your setup and troubleshoot the technical details that might be blocking visibility.

- Being outranked by local competition
- Conflicting or inconsistent NAP profile
- Service area or address setup issues
- A neglected, outdated profile
- Brand name or filtering conflicts
- Or a rogue Google algorithm tweak that needs manual intervention
Fixing your visibility is part science, part patience, and mostly persistence. But when done right, your Google Business Profile becomes one of the most valuable pieces of local real estate your business can own.
